“How Do I Become You?” A webinar discussion with LIU alumni, Norma F. Stanley

Our MFA in Creative Writing and Publishing students are producing the Polk Professional Series podcast “How Do I Become You?” in Grammy nominee and Audie Award winner, Professor Tavia Gilbert’s, podcast class. In the fall semester, the Polk Professional Series podcast was hosted by Dr. Robin Hemley and Dr. Rita Banerjee and supported through a collaboration with the Hutton House. Some of the authors featured in the podcast included: neuroscientist and best-selling author David J. Linden; memoirist and journalist for VICE, MTV, and the New York Times, Carvell Wallace; New Jersey poet and memoirist, Susanna Paola Antonetta; internationally acclaimed essayist and filmmaker, David Shields; and fiction writer and indie press publisher, Torrey Peters, author of the New York Times Bestseller, Detransition, Baby. |

This semester, our Certificate in Manuscript Preparation student Dr. Antonio Brown will be hosting “How Do I Become You?” During the podcast, Dr. Brown will be interviewing LIU Brooklyn alumni who have gone on to have careers in journalism, as creative writers, in publishing, and in media.
Dr. Antonio Brown holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. He contributed the autobiographical memoir “Strange Fruit” to the American Library Association Award winning anthology For Colored Boys. He has also contributed to the New York Times column “Room For Debate.” Brown has served as a Professor of Political Science, is a published academic, and recipient of numerous awards including being named a National Science Foundation Fellow. He also has served as a scholar and researcher at UCLA and Irvine Foundation Fellow at Stanford University. Brown has been recruited to numerous boards of directors including the International Society of Political Psychology. He held office as a nationally elected member of the Board of Directors of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and has served as the President of the Board of Directors of the ACLU of Southern California. Brown also became a member of the Community Advisory Board of KCET Television (the Public Broadcasting Station [PBS] of Southern California). He has recently completed an MFA in Writing and Publishing and is completing his first novel as well as an autobiographical memoir.

Our next guest on “How Do I Become You?” is Norma Stanley, founder/CEO of E.E.E. Marketing Group, Inc., which stands for Enlightened, Empowered and Enriched, where she serves as a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion/Multicultural Communications Consultant to companies wanting to reach, connect with and market to the global disability community and its network of families, advocates and supporters.
A 1980 graduate of L.I.U., Norma is an award-winning professional, including being honored with a Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award from President Barack Obama for her disability community work. She is also an author, speaker, journalist, producer/host of two radio shows, one streaming television show, and is an independent recording artist/songwriter.
